Translating the Science of Learning Into Applicable and Coherent Practice

At Learning Science Partners, we work alongside schools, districts, and educational organizations to translate learning science into instructional practices, professional learning, and organizational change to improve student outcomes at scale.

“How do we define high-quality teaching and learning in our district?”

How We Approach Professional Learning

Too often, schools and school systems expect educators to sit through one-and-done professional learning experiences rather than grounding adult learning in what we know about the mind.

Our work is different. We believe that professional learning should model the very principles it promotes, and we should use the science of learning in order to teach it.

We begin by building shared understanding about how people learn, focusing on how we attend to, process, encode, and retain information. We then invite teachers and leaders to consider how those principles play out in their classrooms, their schools, and their systems.

Rather than relying on isolated, short-term initiatives, we work deeply alongside our partners to build coherence over time, infusing learning science into everything from instruction, leadership, and coaching, to curriculum, and professional learning design.

Learning Science Is Not Another Initiative

AWARENESS

Building initial understanding of how learning happens

UNDERSTANDING

Deepening knowledge and developing a common language

APPLICATION

Applying principles to instruction, coaching, and leadership

COHERENCE

Aligning practices across classrooms, schools, and systems

SYSTEMWIDE PRACTICE

Sustaining evidence-informed practice that improves learning for every student

OUR DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Built on Science. Grounded in Practice. Focused on Every Student.

Our design principles guide every decision we make - ensuring our work is research-grounded, classroom-connected, and focused on lasting impact.

Evidence-Informed

Grounded in cognitive science, instructional research, educator expertise, and the realities of school and district contexts.

Practice-Based

Built around authentic classroom examples, instructional scenarios, video, student work, and the decisions educators make every day.

Systems-Focused

In service of coherent, sustainable change that can be felt across the system rather than small pockets of hope.

Equity-Driven

Centered on ensuring all students experience deep, cognitively demanding learning, not the illusion of engagement or surface-level participation.

OUR SERVICES

Professional Learning That Moves From Awareness to Systemwide Practice

Our services help educators and leaders understand the science of learning and apply it to improve instruction, leadership, and outcomes for every student.

1.

School & District Partnerships

Our school and district partnerships are deep, durable engagements that last 1–3 years. The longer timeframe allows for sustainable, systemic change.

Partners have worked on a range of strategic efforts, such as:
  • Identifying the needs of the system and contextually relevant supports.
  • Developing a shared understanding of and language for high-quality teaching across a school or district.
  • Empowering instructional leaders to incorporate equity-driven, evidence-informed practices with alignment.
2.

Institutes & Workshops

Our institutes and workshops provide an introduction to the science of learning, exploring how it can shape the decisions teachers and leaders make every day.

Here we explore foundational concepts of the mind so that educators can 'get their hands dirty' with the work of evidence-informed practice. Sessions consider a range of learning science principles, such as:

Cognitive Load
How much information can students bear at one time?
Effortful Thinking
What type of thinking best supports robust learning?
Prior Knowledge
How does our existing knowledge shape the way we encounter new ideas?
Memory & Retrieval
Why do we remember some things and forget others?
Our institutes explore how such principles play out within the conditions of real schools and classrooms. Focal areas include:
  • How to interpret curricular materials and make them applicable within your context.
  • How to plan for instruction that focuses on what students are thinking more than what the teacher is doing.
  • How to adapt instructional choices: from effective question formulation and task design, to assessment and feedback.
3.

Leadership & Implementation Support

Our leadership and implementation support work is done shoulder-to-shoulder with leadership teams as they seek to prioritize areas for improvement and embed learning science into their systems and structures over time.

This can include support around:
  • How to ground school or district resource allocation in an understanding of what we know works and why.
  • How to design arcs of high-quality, relevant, and sustainable professional learning, rather than one-off experiences.
  • How to build observation, feedback, and evaluation systems informed by the science of learning.
4.

Keynotes & Conferences

Our public speaking offerings include conference keynotes, pre- or post-conference intensives, district events, and PLC gatherings.

We draw on research, classroom examples, and system-level insight to help audiences move beyond enthusiasm for learning science toward clearer thinking about what it requires in practice.

Recent appearances include:

Learning science becomes not another initiative, but a foundation for how educators teach, lead, and learn together.

LEARNING SCIENCE IN ACTION

Learning Science Applied In Real Educational Contexts

Our work spans schools, districts and educational organizations. In every context, the throughline is the same: helping educators make learning science usable, coherent, and sustainable in the places where teaching and leadership actually happen.
